Nordic Neopaganism and White Supremacy
June 27 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm MDT
When Nordic Neopaganism comes up in conversation, usually the topic is haunted by the specter of white supremacy, and rightfully so. While the many iterations of Nordic Neopaganism are beautiful and empowering, like any ideology they can be co-opted and transformed in ways inclusive to some and exclusive or perhaps dangerous to others. As recently as the capital riot, Nordic Neopagan symbolism was seen inked in flesh, whereas at Charlottesville there were both tattoos and banners bearing important symbols such as runes and the mighty hammer Mjolnir, weapon of Thor used to ward and protect the nine realms of existence, all of humanity included. While the individuals at these events bearing these symbols have their own relationships with them and are indeed “valid” practitioners of Nordic Neopaganism, it is good praxis to be vocal about the groups these individuals belong to and examine how the ideology of these groups enables white supremacy. This discussion will explore the iterations and history of contemporary Nordic Neopaganisms; namely Heathenry, Asatru, and Nordic Animism. During this exploration we will examine the current state of groups belonging to these categories. We will see that the majority of Nordic Neopagans wish no ill will on any and promote inclusion in their gatherings. Simultaneously, we will also analyze particularly well-known Nordic Neopagan groups that have transformed over time which now promote the idea of “Nordic Neopaganism for Nordic- descended People”. This discussion will explore the nuances of these groups and pinpoint where and why white supremacy arises within them, paying special attention to the sway that Western, Christian sensibilities have held over such gatherings.
